United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
About us
With 197 Parties, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has near universal membership and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep a global average temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.

Doubling down on renewables paired with inclusive policies unlocks a triple win: ✅ accelerating emissions reduction ✅ driving economic growth ✅ delivering real social benefits Read more in this new UNDP report: go.undp.org/Uza
🟢 New report: Charged for change - the case for renewable energy in climate action. Clean energy isn’t just about megawatts. It’s about changing lives and shaping a fairer future. A new study by UNDP, the Frederick S. Pardee Institute for International Futures and Octopus Energy shows how setting clear, time-bound renewable energy targets - supported by inclusive policies - can unlock a triple win: 👉 Accelerate emissions reduction. 👉 Drive economic growth. 👉 Deliver real social benefits. Key findings include: 🔹 Tripling #RenewableEnergy by 2030 keeps 1.5°C within reach 🔹 $20 trillion in cumulative savings possible by 2060 🔹 193 million people lifted out of extreme poverty 🔹 GDP grows by $48 trillion under the most ambitious scenario 🔹 550 million more people gain access to clean water and sanitation As countries prepare their next round of national climate plans (NDCs), this is a critical moment to raise ambition. A world powered by renewables is not only possible - it can also be more affordable and better for people and the planet. 🗣️ We issue warnings for high winds. Shouldn’t we do the same for high heat? 📊 Not all heatwaves are the same. As heat intensifies, so does its risk—especially for vulnerable people. In our latest explainer, heat expert John Nairn explains why measuring and communicating heatwave intensity is critical, just as we do for storms or strong winds. 📢 Explore WMO’s explainer to better understand how heatwave intensity is assessed—and why integrating this metric into early warning systems is a key component of climate resilience. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eUHQ3R_w

“It is clear that we need to go further, faster, and fairer,” said UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell at the closing plenary of the #JuneClimateMeetings in Bonn. Delegates from around the world had come together to drive forward progress on key issues ahead of the #COP30 UN Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil, in November. “In areas such as just transition, gender, adaptation, implementation of the global stocktake outcomes, and transparency, the hard work by delegates over the past 10 days has paid off. Work on some other areas has struggled. We have a lot more to do before we meet again for COP30. We must find a way to get to the hard decisions sooner.” Read his full remarks here: https://lnkd.in/epEYva-h

As we close the #JuneClimateMeetings, it is clear that we need to go further, faster, and fairer. In areas such as just transition, gender, adaptation, implementation of the global stocktake outcomes, and transparency, the hard work by delegates over the past 10 days has paid off. Work on some other areas has struggled. We have a lot more to do before we meet again for #COP30 in Belém, Brazil in November. We must find a way to get to the hard decisions sooner. We need leaders and ministers to roll up their sleeves, and we will need negotiators to sit together between sessions to find common ground. All over the world, climate action is accelerating. Presenting astonishing opportunities. Smart leaders should tackle tough issues, create change and seize the enormous benefits of bold action: jobs, economic growth, health, clean, affordable energy. We look forward to receiving new and stronger national climate plans from all countries by September and will include them in a report to show how far we’ve come and how far we must go. We’ll also share lessons and identify barriers to overcome with new reports on transparency, and on adaptation plans. All eyes will then be on COP30 to see how nations pick up the pace. I also thank Parties for agreeing the UNFCCC’s budget. We take this as a vote of confidence in our collective work, and a clear signal that governments continue to see UN-convened climate cooperation as essential, even in difficult times. This is a modest but vital investment, because this process is humanity's only means of preventing climate-driven global economic meltdown, with terrible human costs. Just as we have no Planet B, there is no process B. More: https://bit.ly/4erzo5S 📸 Lara Murillo

This new report 👇👇👇 finds that almost 92% of the world’s population now has basic access to electricity — but that over 666 million people still remain without access. Another key finding: Distributed renewable energy — a combination of mini-grid and off-grid solar systems — can play a major role in accelerating access, especially in rural areas, as it is both cost-effective and rapidly scalable.
